Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy franchise) has confirmed she’ll be reprising her role in the upcoming Avatar 2 this summer!

Saldana is on a roll with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premiering just over two weeks away, which will give her a little bit of a breather before she’s back at it filming for the long-awaited sequel to the 2009 Oscar-winning Avatar.

“We haven’t shot it yet. Anything I can tell you about Avatar 2,3,4,5? We’re going to start this summer,” Saldana said in an interview with Screen Rant. “Late summer, and it’s probably going to go all the way until early next year shooting, and I’m really excited about it.”

Saldana is expressed how she is especially excited to begin working with writer-director James Cameron again. “I’m gonna get to work with James Cameron, who I’ve missed for so long. So I can’t wait to be under his mentorship again because he has been the best role model and the best mentor in the business for me.”

The journey to Avatar 2 has been unusually prolonged.  As Fox chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos said in 2016, “James Cameron has his own pace.” Cameron did take 12 years after previous global record holder Titanic to drop Avatar. Between those two films, the director has generated $4.9 billion in global box office for the studio, so it’s not too surprising that Saldana has been happy to wait patiently.

A release date for Avatar 2 has not yet been confirmed, but with filming beginning this summer, it looks like it’s well on its way!
