It’s about to be “Zoey-ish!” ABC is gearing up to create a spinoff of its hit series, Black-ish, starring Yara Shahidi!  The network is working with series creator Kenya Barris and ABC Studios on the new comedy series, which will focus on character, Zoey Johnson and her college experience.

Created by Barris and former showrunner, Larry Wilmore, the spinoff is set to be introduced as a backdoor pilot episode on Black-ish this spring.  This upcoming pilot is in the early stages and a deal is currently pending.

Wilmore served served as Executive Producer/Showrunner for the first 13 episodes of Black-ish before leaving to headline his Comedy Central late night talk show and most recently returned to ABC Studios with an overall deal.

It’s clear that Shahidi is well on her way towards prime-time television stardom as her popular and stylish character, Zoey — the daughter of Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross) is bound to become a focal point as she heads to college.  Most recently in this third season of Black-ish, Zoey nabbed a Teen Vogue internship with the help of her dad, where she thrived.

Should the spinoff come to fruition, it’ll be Barris’ second new comedy in contention at ABC for next season.  The top comedy-writer producer also co-wrote and serves as Executive Producer with the Vijal Patel comedy pilot, Libby & Malcolm.

Last year, Shahidi signed-on as a model with New York’s Women Management modeling agency to provide a platform for women of color in more diverse roles. With this possible spinoff likely to launch, Shahidi will be the shooting star we know she is!
