Whoopi Goldberg will be a guest star in ABC’s eight hour miniseries, When We Rise.  The cast includes Michael K. Williams (Boardwalk Empire, The Wire) and Ivory Aquino in addition to guest stars, Rosie O’Donnell, Denis O’Hare, David Hyde Pierce, Rachel Griffiths, Mary-Louise Parker, and Guy Pearce.

When We Rise is a seven part series about the gay rights movement.  The series chronicles the personal and political struggles, setbacks and triumphs of a diverse family of men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the U.S. Civil Rights struggle.

Goldberg will portray Pat Norman, the first openly gay employee of the San Francisco Health Department.

The event limited series is executive-produced by Dustin Lance Black (Milk, Big Love, J. Edgar), Laurence Mark (Julie & Julia, Dreamgirls, Jerry Maguire), Bruce Cohen (American Beauty, Milk) and Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Milk) for ABC. Van Sant will direct the two-hour premiere of the seven-episode event limited series.

When We Rise is written and created by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and produced by ABC Studios.
