Spike Lee made his first feature-length film, She’s Gotta Have It, over the course of 12 days in the summer of 1985 on a small budget. The film launched Lee’s career and, now, almost 32 years later, a sneak peek for the Netflix contemporary reboot has finally been released.
The 10-episode series centers on Nola (DeWanda Wise), a Brooklyn-based artist in her late 20’s struggling to define herself and divide her time among her friends, her job and her three lovers: the cultured model Greer Childs (Cleo Anthony); the protective investment banker Jamie Overstreet (Lyriq Bent); and Da Original B-Boy Sneakerhead Mars Blackmon (Hamilton alum Anthony Ramos), who still wears Jordans but now is a social-media phenomenon. Wise’s Nola Darling is a sexually liberated, free spirited painter/mixed media artist. Chyna Layne and Ilfenesh Hadeara, Margot Bingham, Sydney Morton and Joie Lee also star.
Spike Lee will direct each episode and executive produce alongside his wife Tonya Lewis Lee, whom Lee credits with having the initial idea to turn his movie into a series.
The series is scheduled to be released on Thanksgiving Day.
