Less than 48 hours ago, it was announced that Kerry Washington’s newly established production company, Simpson Street, signed a two year overall deal with ABC Studios.  Today, it was announced that Emmy winning actress Viola Davis has signed an overall deal with ABC Studios.  Under the agreement, Davis and her partner Julius Tennon will develop new projects for broadcast, cable, and streaming services through their production company, JuVee Productions, for ABC Studios and its cable/digital division ABC Signature.

JuVee Productions has brought in Andrew Wang to serve as Head of Television Development and Production. Wang comes from Bravo, where he was VP and head of Scripted Television Development and Production.

“Viola Davis’ award-winning work in theater, film and television has provided a powerful foundation to advocate for greater opportunities for communities that are traditionally underrepresented in film and television, and to tell the stories that haven’t but need to be told…Viola and Julius’ determination to provide these opportunities, and to tell these stories, through new voices and fresh perspectives, in any format, is what excited me about joining the team at JuVee Productions.” – Andrew Wang, Head of Television and Production, JuVee Productions

JuVee Productions partnered with ABC Studios during the 2014-15 season during the original development of legal drama Conviction that is now in development at TNT.  The series is a legal drama inspired by Kym Worthy, the second African American to serve as a county prosecutor in Michigan.  Debra Martin Chase (Sparkle) will serve as executive producer of the project alongside co-executive producer Ayanna Floyd (Empire) who will also be writing the script.

“We started JuVee because we wanted to see narratives that reflected our multi-ethnic and multifaceted culture.  We wanted to be a part of classic storytelling, and we didn’t want to wait.” – Viola Davis

Two-time Oscar nominee Davis made history last fall, becoming the first African American woman to win a best actress in a drama series Emmy Award for her role as Annalise Keating on HTGAWM.  It was recently announced that she will star alongside Denzel Washington in the film adaptation of the Broadway place Fences
