WATCH: Viola Davis Discusses How She Embraced Her Role on ‘HTGAWM’

Two-time Oscar nominee Viola Davis made history last fall, becoming the first African American woman to win a best actress in a drama series Emmy Award for her role as Annalise Keating on HTGAWM.  In the above clip, Davis discusses how she overcame her fears by playing Annalise Keating on the hit TV series and the importance of portraying a “real” black woman on network television.

“I want the work to reflect my level of gifts and talent. I don’t want it to reflect my color or my sex or my age. That’s what I want.” – Viola Davis

Davis recently signed an overall deal with ABC Studios.  Under the agreement, Davis and her partner Julius Tennon will develop new projects for broadcast, cable, and streaming services through their production company, JuVee Productions, for ABC Studios and its cable/digital division ABC Signature.  She is also set star alongside Denzel Washington in the film adaptation of the Broadway place Fences.
