Urbanworld Film Festival has announced that during it’s 20th year anniversary celebration,  Issa Rae will be screening the highly anticipated HBO series Insecure, and Gina Prince-Bythewood will be screening the upcoming Fox special event series Shots Fired.  Prince-Bythewood and Rae will join festival ambassadors Ava DuVernay and David Oyelowo as well as actors Cory Hardict, Aisha Hinds, DeWanda Wise and LaLa Anthony who are all confirmed to attend this years event.

Insecure will contain themes from Rae’s highly acclaimed web series, The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl, which garnered over 20 million views and nearly 200,000 YouTube subscribers. It explores the black female experience in an unclichéd and authentic way, and revolves around the friendship of two modern day black women and their uncomfortable experiences and racy tribulations. Issa tries to figure out what and who she wants in life, and how to take control of it. Meanwhile, Molly is a successful corporate attorney who appears to have it all but struggles inside as she looks for external ways to fix her life.  The series will also touch on social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience.

The series stars Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Lisa Joyce, Neil Brown, Jr and is created and executive produced by Issa Rae. Prentice Penny (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Melina Matsoukas, (Beyonce’s Formation), Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry will serve as executive producers, and Larry Wilmore will serve as a consultant for the series.

Insecure will screen on Friday, September 23, 2016 at 8:00 pm, and a Q&A with Rae, Ellis and Matsoukas, moderated by Bevy Smith, will immediately follow the screening.

Prince-Bythewood’s Shots Fired is an explosive look at the criminal justice system, and examines the events that follow when an African-American police officer kills an unarmed white college student in a small town in North Carolina.  Before the town has a chance to grapple with this tragedy, the neglected murder of an African-American teen is brought to light, re-opening wounds that threaten to tear the town apart.

The series is written and executive-produced by Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood. Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo also will serve as executive producers. Prince-Bythewood will direct.  The cast includes Sanaa Lathan (The Best Man Holiday, The Perfect Guy), Helen Hunt (As Good As it Gets), Aisha Hinds (Under the Dome, True Blood), Tristian Wilds (The Wire, 90201), DeWanda Wise (The Mentalist), Edwina Findley (Get Hard, Middle of Nowhere), Alicia Sanz (From Dusk Till Dawn), Marqus Clae, Shamier Anderson (Race), Clare-Hope Ashitey (Suspects), Stephen James (Race, Selma), and more.
