Tika Sumpter (Southside with You, The Haves and the Have Nots) is set to star and co-executive produce The 313, a CBS drama project written by Tracy McMillan (Satisfaction, Mad Men).

The 313 (which is Detroit’s area code), revolves around 29-year-old female City Council President (Sumpter) who suddenly becomes the Mayor of Detroit when a sex scandal brings down the current administration, and has to contend with all the staggering obstacles the job brings.

McMillan is writing the script and will executive produce alongside Emily Gerson Saines of Brookside Artist Management, for CBS TV Studios, and Michael London through his production company Groundswell Productions.  The project was brought to Groundswell by director of development Hilary Zaitz Michael.

Sumpter was recently seen playing young Michelle Obama in the indie feature Southside with You, which she also produced.  She has been featured in numerous supporting roles such as What’s Your Number? and Think Like a Man.  She then went on to star in Sparkle in 2012 which was followed by A Madea Christmas in 2013.  Later that year, Sumpter began her role on The Haves and the Have Nots which aired on the OWN Network.  Sumpter starred alongside Kevin Hart and Ice Cube in Ride Along and Ride Along 2, and also starred in Bessie alongside Queen Latifah.
