WATCH: Powerful First Trailer for ‘The Hate You Give’ Starring Amandla Stenberg, Issa Rae, & Regina Hall

The trailer for The Hate U Give made it’s on -air debut during the BET Awards.

The film is based on Angie Thomas’ best-seller YA novel of the same name.  The novel was one of the first novels written in direct response to the Black Lives Matter movement.  Thomas began writing the novel in response to the 2009 death of Oscar Grant, a black 22-year-old San Francisco man who was fatally shot in the back by a police officer.  She eventually put the book aside, shelving it for years until the deaths of Mike Brown and Tamir Rice brought conversations about police brutality back to the fore in the fall of 2014. Thomas rushed to finish up the novel for its timely release last February.

Starring Amandla Stenberg, The Hate U Give follows the story of Starr, a young African-American student inspired to activism after witnessing the police shooting of an unarmed friend Khalil, played by Algee Smith.  Co-starring Regina Hall, Issa Rae, Common and K.J. Apa, and more.

The Hate U Give will premiere on October 19.  Check out the powerful trailer above.
