Nia Long (Boyz n the Hood, Love Jones) has been confirmed as a lead in ABC’s untitled spinoff from the comedy series The Goldbergs! She’ll join Bryan Callen, Tim Meadows, Rachel Crow, and Summer Parker in the pilot. The Goldbergs is created by Adam F. Goldberg (who also serves as executive producer) and Marc Firek, Happy Madison, Seth Gordon, and SonyTV round out the executive producing team.

The spinoff series follows two high school teachers who become unlikely father figures to the kids at their Philadelphia school, the same school Adam Goldberg (Sean Giambrone) graduated from. Long will portray the center character Lucy Winston, a single mother of three and described as “legit cool.” She’s worked at the same dead end job for the last 7 years, but she needs a better life for her children, who are becoming older and inching towards trouble. After begging her brother, Andre Glascott (Meadows), for a job at the Academy he runs (free tuition for three included), Lucy and her kids all have to adjust to a new life in a new school — but schools are somewhat the same all over the country, with many of the same problems such as status, cliques, sports, substance abuse.

Long will also be appearing in a guest-starring role on Fox’s hit Empire and recurs as Izzy on Amazon’s Hand of God. This role will be a return to ABC after starring on Uncle Buck last season.

Nia Long is truly a staple on our screens (big and small) so we’re sure she’ll be able to the necessary spunk to this hilarious spinoff!
