Golden Globe-winning actress Taraji P. Henson (Empire) will be honored for her excellence in television and will receive the 2016 Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Award alongside Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones, The Tudors) who will receive the Max Mara “Face of the Future” award. The award ceremony will be held on June 15th in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Women in Film Los Angeles has annually honored outstanding women in the entertainment industry since 1977. This year, the theme is “Designing Change,” highlighting the organization’s year-round commitment to design and promote initiatives and programs to increase opportunities for women on- and off-screen until gender equality in entertainment is achieved.
“We are on a mission to change the gender imbalance that is endemic to the entertainment industry; to design a more inclusive business for all women in the film, television and digital creative arenas. The women we honor this year are all catalysts for that change and exemplars in their fields.” – Cathy Schulman, WIFLA President
In addition to Henson and Dormer, producers Denise Di Novi, Lauren Shuler Donner, Lucy Fisher, Lianne Halfon, Lynda Obst, Jane Rosenthal, Paula Wagner and Paula Weinstein will accept The Crystal Award for Excellence in Film. Lesli Linka Glatter will receive the The BMW Dorothy Arzner Directors Award and talent agent Hylda Queally of Creative Artists Agency will receive The Sue Mengers Award.
“We are proud to recognize this year’s honorees not only for their talent, but also for their strength, perseverance and their tireless efforts to change the balance for women in this industry, by example and by deed, whether in front of or behind the camera and in one case literally as an agent for change.” – Iris Grossman, WIFLA Chair
Henson is currently in production for the film adaptation of Margot Lee Shetterly’s book, Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race where she will portray mathematics genius Katherine Johnson alongside Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae.
