Sundance Next Fest will honor Dee Rees (Mud Bound, Bessie) with a Vanguard Award. Rees premiered Pariah at Sundance in 2011 and Mudbound in 2017.
Rees’s most recent film Mudbound, sold to Netflix for $12.5m after receiving stellar Sundance reviews. In addition to Mudbound, Rees also has the HBO biopic Bessie, and breakout 2011 film Pariah under her belt.
The festival, now in its fifth year in Los Angeles, will take place Aug. 10-13 at the Theatre at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, and is an extension of the Sundance Next section in Park City, Utah. The weekend event has fast become a summer staple on the L.A. moviegoing calendar presenting an eclectic variety of films, music and live performances.
NEXT FEST picks a handful of titles from the year’s Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and brings them to Los Angeles for their local premiere. The movie is then matched with a curated musical artist, a conversation among filmmakers or a special performance.
In addition to Dee Rees, Ava DuVernay will host a conversation, presented by FilmL.A., Inc., with director Justin Chon after Saturday’s 4:00 p.m. screening of Gook, and director Janicza Bravo will screen her feature directorial debut project Lemon at the festival.
This year’s festival will feature for the second year an event space for ticket holders adjacent to the Ace Hotel known as Next Door, featuring food trucks, drinks, games and events.
Individual tickets are currently on sale. For more information, go to sundance.org/next.
