We have been following writer/director Stella Meghie for quite some time now, so it is great to see that her critically acclaimed debut feature film, Jean of the Jonses will make its Los Angeles debut at the LA Film Festival (LAFF) in the “Buzz” film section this summer.  jean of the jonses

Jean of the Jonses stars Taylour Paige (Hit the Floor), Sherri Shepherd (Top 5, 30 Rock) and Michelle Hurst (Orange is the New Black), made its world premiere in the Narrative Spotlight section at South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) in March. Loosely based on her personal experiences, this indie comedic drama follows 25-year-old Jean and her multi-generational dysfunctional, middle-class Jamaican-American family of women. When an estranged grandfather dies on the doorstep of the family’s brownstone during Sunday dinner, tensions rise, and old conflicts come to a boil as Jean uncovers the family’s buried secrets.

In 2010, Meghie made the decision to leave her career in fashion/beauty and attended The University of Westminster to pursue her passion in screenwriting.  During her first year, she wrote the first draft of the semi-autobiographical feature Jean of the Joneses. Prior to SXSW, the screenplay won the 2012 Showtime Tony Cox Feature Film Screenplay Competition, and Meghie earned a joint fellowship between Tribeca and Canadian Film Centre in 2014.

Meghie recently signed with CAA and currently has a blind script deal at Warner Bros., a pilot in development with John Wells Productions, a comedy optioned by BET titled Funny Woman (a rom-com about trying to remain friends with your ex while looking for new love), and a deal to pen a feature script for VH1, which is being produced by Alicia Keys’ production company AK Worldwide.  She is also a Tribeca Film Institute fellow and Showtime’s Tony Cox Award recipient.

Congrats to Stella Meghie, we look forward to tracking the progress of this talented writer/director!
