OWN has announced the renewal of the critically acclaimed drama Queen Sugar for a fourth season, set to premiere in 2019.

With the renewal announcement also comes news of Anthony Sparks’ promotion to showrunner, which he will take over from season 3’s showrunner Kat Candler. The consistent turnover of showrunners is intentional, as part of creator Ava DuVernay’s initiative to elevate writers and producers who have never been in a showrunner position before. This method is bolstered by Queen Sugar’s all-female directing team which has been in place since the first season.

In its current third season, the show ranks #1 in its time period across all cable in the network’s key women 25-54 demo. It’s also Wednesday night’s #1 original series across all of broadcast and cable for African-American women.

“Under Ava’s creative vision and leadership, Queen Sugar continues to earn a well-deserved reputation for depicting nuanced characters, rich storylines and establishing an inclusive team that inspires and ignites much needed conversations about our society today,” said Erik Logan, president, OWN. “We are very proud of this show, the incredible cast, producers and crew, and can’t wait for more of the Bordelon family in season four.”

Queen Sugar airs Wednesdays at 10:00 on OWN.
