Emmy-nominee actress Phylicia Rashad is set to star in the new OWN drama series David Makes Man.

David Makes Man revolves around a 14-year-old prodigy from the projects who is depended on by his hardworking mother to pull them out of poverty. David (Tarell Alvin McCraney) also remains troubled by the death of a best friend. He must choose between the streets that raised him or the higher education that may offer him a way out. The series, set in south Florida, explores the trauma sustained in the fight for a better life.

Rashad stars as Dr. Woods-Trap, an intimidating teacher at David’s middle school, whose assignments are challenging but always in the search of teaching a greater lesson. Her students and coworkers like and respect her, and she sees something in David that leads her to become his mentor and one of his biggest advocates.

Rashad starred with McCraney in the play Head of Passes in 2017, and will appear in the upcoming Creed II starring Michael B. Jordan.

David Makes Man is slated to premiere in 2019.
