Oscar winner Octavia Spencer actress will be executive producing and starring in an eight-episode Netflix show about Madam C.J. Walker.  Spencer will star as Sarah Breedlove, a.k.a Madam C.J. Walker. LeBron James will also executive produce with Kasi Lemmons (Eve’s Bayou, Talk to Me) directing the first episode.

Based on the book On Her Own Ground by A’Lelia Bundles, Madam C.J. Walker tells the untold and highly irreverent story of black hair care pioneer Madam C.J. Walker, and how she overcame hostile racism, rivalries, tumultuous marriages and a dysfunctional family to become America’s first self-made black female millionaire. Spencer stars as Sarah Breedlove, famously known as Madam C.J. Walker. On Her Own Ground is considered the definitive biography of Walker, written by her great-great-granddaughter, Bundles.

Married and widowed by the age of 20, Walker spent two decades working as a washerwoman for $1.50 a week. Her fortune changed with the discovery of a groundbreaking hair care formula for black women. By her death in 1919, Walker managed to build a beauty empire from nothing, achieving a level of wealth and success unheard of for a black woman at the time. She used her money and influence selflessly, devoting her life to philanthropy and social activism.

Spencer recently starred in the Oscar winning film The Shape of Water, and has starred in award winning films such as Hidden Figures and The Help.
