Academy Award winning actress Octavia Spencer has joined the cast of Luce alongside Naomi Watts, Tim Roth and Kelvin Harrison Jr.

The film will be directed by Julius Onah and revolves around an African teenager (Harrison Jr.) and former child soldier now living with loving adoptive American parents (Watts and Roth) in a suburban community. A star athlete and top student, Luce’s idealized image is challenged by one of his teachers (Spencer) when his unsettling views on political violence come to light, putting a strain on family bonds while igniting intense debates on race and identity.

The film is currently in production in New York.

Spencer made her film debut in A Time To Kill and made her Hollywood breakthrough portraying Minny Jackson in The Help, which earned her an Academy Award, Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA, and a Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress. She has maintained critically-acclaimed roles in films such as Fruitvale StationGet on UpBlack or WhiteSmashedSnowpiercerThe Divergent Series: Insurgent, and Zootopia. She starred in Hidden Figures, where she portrayed Dorothy Vaughan, earning Academy Award, Golden Globe and SAG nominations for Best Supporting Actress, and was recently seen on the big screen in Gifted.  Spencer also recently joined the cast of upcoming limited series revolving around the life of entrepreneur and social activist Madame C.J. Walker
