Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum) has started shooting Been So Long, a new modern-day musical for Film Four!

The movie musical is set on the streets of Camden, North London and will feature a soundtrack of RnB, nu-soul, UK dance and cinematic orchestration. It is based on the 2009 musical by Ché Walker and Arthur Darvill, which premiered at The Young Vic. Been So Long is directed by Tinge Krishnan, who previously helmed Junkhearts in 2011.

Coel will lead the cast as Simone, a young, spirited, single-minded mom with a poet’s soul. Ronke Adekoluejo, who portrayed Amy on an episode of Chewing Gum, will be reuniting with Coel. Arinzé Kene and George Mackay will also co-star.

Michaela Coel is a British poet, singer-songwriter, screenwriter, and award winning actress and playwright. In 2016, she won the BAFTA for Best Female Performance in A Comedy Programme and Breakthrough Talent for the Netflix tv comedy, Chewing Gum. Chewing Gum is based off of Coel’s play, Chewing Gum Dreams, her senior graduation one-woman-show project at Guildhall. The play went on to be produced by the Bush Theatre, Royal Theatre Holland, Royal Exchange Theatre, and National Theatre. She also appeared in shows such as London Spy, The Aliens, and Black Mirror.

Coel is definitely a rising star and unique talent so we wish her well and eagerly await her portrayal in this new musical!
