WATCH: Issa Rae & Michael B. Jordan Discuss the Cultural Shift in Hollywood

Michael B. Jordan (Fahrenheit 451) and Issa Rae (Insecure) recently participated in Variety’s “Actors on Actors” roundtable, sitting down to chat about a myriad of topics about their careers and challenging the ever-prevalent stereotypes of Hollywood.

Rae and Jordan discuss their most recent projects, such as Jordan’s HBO movie Fahrenheit 451. Rae mentioned the timeliness of the topics covered inFahrenheit 451 and Jordan shared his reasons for taking on that kind of material.  Jordan shared, “It felt spot-on to what was going on in the world, and it was the perfect vehicle for that message to pay attention to what’s going on.”  “Not being so plugged in and distracted by what’s on your iPhone, the apps, the social media. Are you just constantly being fed ideas that are not  your own thoughts?”

Their introspective chat also covered a range of topics such as the changing face of the industry. Rae commented that the ideals of what makes a “leading lady” in Hollywood are finally starting to change: “I just knew the type that they would go for. So I was just like, I’m not even going to bother.  Now something has shifted where I’m like[…….] yeah, I’m going to go after that,” Rae said.  “I’ve seen that people have been receptive.  A movie like [Black Panther] and other films from other filmmakers of color that have come out have really changed who people perceive as a leading lady, and that just feels so dope to me.”

Check out the video above to watch Rae and Jordan reflect on both their careers and roles in the changing Hollywood landscape.
