Former MSNBC News Host Melissa Harris-Perry has officially joined BET News as a special correspondent where she will host and develop various BET News programs, and create long form news specials for the network.

According to Deadline, her first assignment will be to cover the Democratic and Republican National Conventions taking place later this month alongside BET News correspondent Marc Lamont Hill.  A wrap special after the GOP convention will air on Sunday, July 24th that will include highlights from the convention in addition to exclusive interviews with high profile news makers and celebrities.

Harris-Perry spent an epic four years as the brilliance behind MSNBC’s Nerdland.   Her voice was dedicated to those from marginalized communities, and a void was felt when she left her post because she refused to sell out on racial issues.  MSNBC did not want Harris-Perry to cover the details of the 2016 election during her segment, and preferred that she spend her two hours on air covering “irrelevant” news. Harris-Perry is currently a professor at Wake Forest University, and an editor-at-large for Elle magazine.
