Insecure director Melina Matsoukas has teamed up with Emmy winner Lena Waithe (The Chi) and get our star Daniel Kaluuya for the upcoming feature film Queen & Slim.

Queen & Slim was written by Waithe who derived the idea from James Frey’s novel A Million Little Pieces. The romantic drama  is about a black couple on a first date that goes awry when they are pulled over by a police officer at a traffic stop. They kill the police officer rather than turn themselves in, and subsequently go on the run. The plot is described as is a complex with many layers, exploring America’s social and political climate through the lens of a genre-defying love story. Kaluuya will star as Slim, while the filmmakers are currently looking for a fresh face to play Queen.

“To me, this is protest art,” Waithe said. “It’s about being Black and trying to fall in love in a world that’s burning down around you.”

“It’s a film that defines Black love as a revolutionary act,” Matsoukas added. “It shows that our union is the greatest weapon against the assault on Black people in America.”

The pair previously collaborated when Matsoukas directed the Master of None episode based on Waithe’s own story of coming out as a lesbian to her family. Waithe became the first Black woman to ever win a comedy writing Emmy for her work on that episode.

The film will be distributed by Universal, which has an agreement with Makeready, and is set for release on November 27, 2019, and we are already counting down!
