The Directors Guild of America Awards has announced the nominees for outstanding achievements in television in 2017, and despite the Golden Globes overlooking many women who should have been nominated for Best Director this year, powerhouse director Melina Matsoukas has been nominated for a DGA Award for the award winning “Thanksgiving” episode of the hit Netflix series Master of None.

This is exciting news considering the fact that this is the episode that won Lena Waithe an Emmy and a host of other accolades.  It is considered one of the best episodes of television in 2017!

The DGA also nominated Jordan Peele in the Feature Film category and for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director for Get Out, making Peele the fourth black director to be nominated by the DGA (previous nominees include Barry Jenkins, Steve McQueen, and Lee Daniels, all of whom were nominated for films released within the last 10 years).

Matsoukas made her television directing debut with Insecure, and is currently set to adapt the the award-winning Marlon James novel A Brief History of Seven Killings for Amazon Studios.  Since 2007, Matsoukas, has directed nine Beyoncé videos, including the highly conceptional Formation.  She won a Grammy for Rihanna’s We Found Love video, and also directed Solange’s Losing You and I Decided, Ciara’s Work (feat. Missy Elliot) and Jay Z’s Run.  Matoukas also serves as a director for an all female non-profit organization that empowers women titled, We Do It Together.
