Mary J. Blige Wins Breakthrough Performance Award at the IndieWire Honors

\

The inaugural IndieWire Honors celebrated six of IndieWire’s most lauded stars of the year.  This list included Mary J. Blige,Issa Rae,Issa Rae, Kumail Nanjiani, Sterling K. Brown, James Franco, and Diane Kruger.

Blige was honored with the Breakout Artist award for her work on the critically acclaimed drama, Mudbound. Directed by Dee Rees, this Netflix original follows two World War II veterans – one white (Garrett Hedlund) and one black (Jason Mitchell) – who return home to work with their respective families on a farm in rural Mississippi, where they struggle to deal with racism and PTSD. Blige plays Florence Jackson, mother to one of the soldiers.

Blige’s character Florence is  described as “a very strong woman,” but also, “a different kind of woman” from modern times. Women in the 1940s “had to be more silent and powerful than boisterous. You see everything on her face. She’s really full of expression. She’s a powerful, silent woman, and she’s got a lot of love in her. in a conversation with GoldDerby, Blige stated that she based Florence on women in her own life, particularly her aunt: “When I was a kid, my mom would send us down South every summer, and I saw this woman. I knew this woman very well.”

Earlier this year, Netflix acquired the film for $12.5 million, and it looks like the investment was certainly worth it as this could be Netflix’s first major Oscar contender, and Dee Rees could become the first black woman to ever be nominated for Best Director.

In addition to Blige, the film stars Garrett Hedlund, Jason Mitchell, Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Rob Morgan, and Jonathan Banks. Mudbound will be available on Netflix and released in theaters on November 17th, so mark your calendars!
