The nominations for the 69th annual Emmy Awards have been announced and many of our favorites such as black-ish, Atlanta, and more are on the list!

If you have been following any form of entertainment news over the past year, I am certain that you are well aware of the ongoing discussion surrounding the lack of inclusion within the walls of Hollywood; however, it seems as if the Emmy nominations are taking the lead when it comes to diversity and inclusion. This year, every lead actor category, both male and female, includes at least one person of color in the pool of nominees, and several of the supporting actor categories also include people of color.

In the Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series category, Viola Davis has been nominated for her role in How To Get Away With Murder. This marks the third year in a row that she has received a nomination in this category. In 2015, Davis made history, by becoming the first black woman to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Cicely Tyson is nominated in the Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series category for her role in How To Get Away With Murder. This will be Ms. Tyson’s 10th Emmy nomination.

Uzo Aduba and Samira Wiley received nominations in the Best Supporting Actress in A Drama Series category for their role in Netflix series, Orange is the New Black. Laverne Cox received a nomination in the Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category for her role in the series as well. Thandie Newton was also in the Best Supporting Actress in A Drama Series category for her role in the HBO series Westworld.

In the Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series category, Tracee Ellis Ross received a nomination for her role in black-Ish. Regina King scored a nomination for her role in American Crime in the Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie category. If King wins her category this year, it will be her third win in a row.

Director and screenwriter Ava DuVernay’s Netflix documentary 13th received 8 Emmy nominations, ranging from Outstanding Directing to Outstanding Writing.

In the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category, Leslie Jones is nominated for Saturday Night Live, and Angela Bassett received a nomination in the Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category for her appearance in the “Thanksgiving” episode of Netflix comedy Master of None. Wanda Sykes received a nomination in the same category for her guest role in black-ish.

Actress, writer, producer Lena Waithe, earned a shared Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series with Aziz Ansari, the co-creator and star of the Netflix series Master of None for theThanksgivingepisode, the most talked about episode of the season.

The Emmy nominations feel like a sign of positive change, when it comes to reflecting the diversity in television. Fingers crossed that this is a sign of permanent change and progress within the industry.
