Brown, James Cromwell, Jussie Smollett and Kate Hudson. Shap will star as Thurgood Marshall’s wife Vivien “Buster” Burey.
The film revolves around a true incident in the life of Marshall, when he was a young attorney, long before he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1941, Marshall was sent to Connecticut by the NAACP to defend a black chauffeur against his wealthy socialite employer in a sexual assault and attempted murder trial that quickly became tabloid news. In need of a high-profile victory but silences by a segregationist court, Marshall partnered with Samuel Friedman (Gad), a young Jewish lawyer who has never tried a case. Marshall and Friedman struggle against a hostile storm of fear and prejudice, driven to discover the truth in the sensationalized trial that helped set the groundwork for the civil rights movement to come.
Sharp has starred in films such as Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married and Malibu’s Most Wanted, and is known for her memorable role in the hit series Girlfriends. She was most recently seen as Johnnie Cochran’s wife in the FX miniseries American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, and can be seen next opposite Damon Wayans on the new Fox series Lethal Weapon.
