Per Deadline, Netflix has acquired global rights to Juanita, starring Alfre Woodard! The acquisition is allegedly a continuation of the streaming giant’s global film strategy of working directly with independent filmmakers. The Clark Johnson-helmed drama pic is filming in Virginia. Joining Woodard are Adam Beach, Blair Underwood, Marcus Henderson and LaTanya Richardson.
The film centers on Juanita (Woodard), a woman who is fed up with her deadbeat grown kids and marginal urban existence and takes a Greyhound bus to Montana, where she reinvents herself and finds her mojo. Roderick Spenser adapted the screenplay based on Dancing on the Edge of the Roof by Sheila Williams.
Homegrown Pictures’ Stephanie Allain and Mel Jones are producing as well as Jason Michael Berman.
Woodard was most recently seen as Professor Hughes in the Netflix-acquired Sundance hit, Burning Sands. Allain also served as a producer for Burning Sands, so it looks like the team is at it again!
The release date hasn’t yet been set, but we’re looking forward to seeing Woodard shine in this flick!
