Oscar winning actress Jennifer Hudson has joined Bron Studios’ (The Birth of a Nation , Fences) upcoming drama, Monster, alongside Kelvin Harrison Jr (Roots), Tim Blake Nelson, John David Washington, Jeffery Wright (Hunger Games), Jennifer Ehle ,and recording artists A$AP Rocky and Nas.
Monster follows Steve (Harrison), a 17-year-old honors student and aspiring filmmaker in Harlem, who is being charged with felony murder for a crime he says he didn’t commit.
This will be Anthony Mandler’s directorial debut. In the past he has worked on music videos for Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Drake. Aaron L. Gilbert will produce, along with Nikki Silver, Tonya Lewis Lee, Mike Jackson and Edward Nahem. Daniel Crown, Yoni Liebling, Jason Cloth, Richard McConnell and Linnea Roberts will act as executive producers. Nas and Legend will also executive produce the feature, and will also play a role in the film’s music.
The film will be produced through Bron Studios, Tonik Productions, and John Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co.
Hudson recently wrapped up a run in the acclaimed Broadway revival of The Color Purple. She won the world over in 2007 with her Academy Award-winning performance as Effie White in the film adaptation of the play Dreamgirls, and went on to star in The Secret Life of Bees, Sex and The City, Think Like A Man, and Lullaby. Most recently, she appeared on the hit Fox series Empire, and will star in the NBC musical, Hairspray Live. Hudson is also in negations to play the legendary Aretha Franklin in the Aretha Franklin biopic, and is set to star as Adam Sandler’s love interest in the Netflix comedy, Sandy Wexler.
