WATCH: Janelle Monae in ‘Welcome to Marwen’ Trailer

Janelle Monae goes miniature in the innovative new film, Welcome to Marwen.

From the director of Forrest Gump and Back to the Future (Robert Zemeckis) comes a movie inspired by the real life of Mark Hogancamp (Steve Carell), a man who suffers a violent attack from a group of Nazis. Traumatized by the event, he retreats into the world of a miniature World War II town that he creates, called Marwen, whose inhabitants include life-like dolls of himself and the women who protect him in his life. In an inventive twist, the dolls are used throughout the movie to help “tell” the story, as reality and fantasy blend together for Hogancamp.

Monae portrays one of the women/dolls that help Hogancamp. She is shown motivating him throughout grueling physical therapy as he recovers post-attack. It is also revealed in those scenes that she is an amputee herself.

The movie is due to release November 21, and also stars Leslie Mann, Diane Kruger, Merritt Weaver, Gwendoline Christie and Eliza Gonzalez.

Welcome to Marwen is Monae’s second movie role, following her work in Hidden Figures. She released her latest album, Dirty Computer, earlier this year. Check out the trailer to see her newest movie role in action.
