HBO has officially announced that Issa Rae’s eight-episode comedy Insecure will debut on the cable network this fall!

The series will contain themes from Rae’s highly acclaimed web series, The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl, which garnered over 20 million views and nearly 200,000 YouTube subscribers. It revolves around the friendship of two modern day black women and their uncomfortable experiences and racy tribulations.

“I don’t think the mainstream media understands people of color are multidimensional. For some reason, there’s an idea that only white people are relatable. I don’t think it’s necessarily racist. But it’s odd, because the people who watch the most television are black women, so we should be represented in more ways.” – Issa Rae

Insecure stars Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Lisa Joyce, Neil Brown, Jr and is created and executive produced by Issa Rae. Prentice Penny (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Melina Matsoukas, (Beyonce’s Formation), Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry will serve as executive producers, and Larry Wilmore will serve as a consultant for the series.

The project was originally set up at HBO in 2013. At the time, Wilmore started his late-night talk show on Comedy Central, and was unable to be actively involved in the pilot. Prentice Penny was able to step in as executive producer and showrunner.

Congrats to Issa Rae!
