WATCH: First Full-Length Trailer for Issa Rae’s ‘Insecure’

Insecure is set to premiere on Sunday, Oct. 9 and the first full trailer has officially been released!  The series will contain themes from Rae’s highly acclaimed web series, The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl, which garnered over 20 million views and nearly 200,000 YouTube subscribers. It explores the black female experience in an unclichéd and authentic way, and revolves around the friendship of two modern day black women and their uncomfortable experiences and racy tribulations. Issa tries to figure out what and who she wants in life, and how to take control of it. Meanwhile, Molly is a successful corporate attorney who appears to have it all but struggles inside as she looks for external ways to fix her life.  The series will also touch on social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience.

“I don’t think the mainstream media understands people of color are multidimensional. For some reason, there’s an idea that only white people are relatable. I don’t think it’s necessarily racist. But it’s odd, because the people who watch the most television are black women, so we should be represented in more ways.” – Issa Rae

Rae spoke in a video on Twitter about why she titled the series Insecure, and why she’s interested in portraying the specific insecurities of specific black women “This is not the quintessential black-woman experience,” she told Time — and that nuance and specificity, as well as the openness to finding power in admitting insecurity, is what makes it look so solid.

“There’s this narrative that’s going around that’s awesome — that black women are fierce, they’re strong, they’re flawless,” she says in the video. “And I don’t know that life. I wanted to center a show around weak black women, and the uncertainty they feel on that journey to get to greatness. It’s like the prequel to black girl magic.” – Issa Rae

Insecure stars Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Lisa Joyce, Neil Brown, Jr and is created and executive produced by Issa Rae. Prentice Penny (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Melina Matsoukas, (Beyonce’s Formation), Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry will serve as executive producers, and Larry Wilmore will serve as a consultant for the series.
