Usually when Academy Awards Nominations drop, there is usually a general sense of “Wait, what? I’ve never heard of that film!” among the mainstream audience. The Oscars are known for technical and artsy acclaim, and not so much box office numbers. Granted, there is a boost once nominations and wins roll in, but the dollars are only second to the award acclaim.

That’s why it’s fantastic news that Hidden Figures, starring Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monáe, and Octavia Spencer has earned the top box office spot among the Oscar nominees! Fresh off its huge SAG Ensemble win, Hidden Figures has climbed to $119 million at an impressive speed. The film, which chronicles Black Women’s significant contributions to NASA’s historic space flights, is now playing at over 3,000 theaters.

In addition to its awards season wins, Taraji and Octavia have been building up buzz, buying out theaters for underrepresented children in an effort to bring awareness to a lesser-known topic. The excitement around the film has also reportedly gained more interest in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) field amongst little girls, which is great! Hidden Figures is expected to reach over $150 million or more between now and the Oscars ceremony.

The box office domination for Hidden Figures is huge news and just further proves that films featuring people of color in the lead continues to maintain peak success!
