Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle) is in negotiations to star in Ava DuVernay‘s Disney adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time.  She will star alongside Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, and Mindy Kaling.

A Wrinkle In Time revolves around a young girl whose government scientist father has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called a ‘tesseract,’ which involves being transported to a fifth dimension with mysterious inhabited planets. She takes part in a search for her father and sees some incredible creatures along the way. Winfrey will play the role of Mrs. Which, the most mysterious of the three unusual beings who arrive to help Meg and Charles Wallace find their missing father.

Mbatha-Raw is playing the role of Mrs. Murry, Meg and Charles Wallace’s mother, who also happens to be a scientist who comes up with the wrinkle in time.

Oscar-winning Frozen writer and co-director Jennifer Lee wrote the script, and production is scheduled to begin this fall.

Mbatha-Raw recently wrapped production for Star Wars: Episode VII, and was last seen on the big screen this summer in Free State of Jones, opposite Matthew McConaughey.  She is also set to star in Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, and was recently cast in An Untamed State, a Fox Searchlight film to be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights).
