Gugu Mbatha-Raw has joined the jury for The 60th BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express.  She will judge alongside Athina Rachel Tsangari, whose Chevalier won the main award in 2016 and is Greece’s entry for next year’s Oscars foreign-language category, director Anthony Chen (Ilo Ilo), and screenwriter Abi Morgan, whose Suffragette opened last year’s festival.

Mbatha-Raw recently wrapped production for Star Wars: Episode VII, and was last seen on the big screen this summer in Free State of Jones, opposite Matthew McConaughey.  Mbatha-Raw is also set to star in Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, and was recently cast in An Untamed State, a Fox Searchlight film to be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights).

The 60th BFI London Film Festival takes place from Wednesday October 5th to Sunday October 16th, and is Britain’s leading film event and one of the world’s best and most established film festivals.  This year, A United Kingdom, directed by Amma Asante (Belle), will open the Festival on October 5th.  The Festival will also screen Queen of Katwe starring Lupita Nyong’o and the critically acclaimed film Moonlight directed by Barry Jenkins.  In addition to these films, 193 fiction and 52 documentary features, including 18 World Premieres, 8 International Premieres, 39 European Premieres will take place at the Festival.  There will also be screenings of 144 short films, including documentary, live action and animated works (view complete list below).

This year the festival will also incorporate a Symposium event titled BFI Black Star.  This event is dedicated to celebrating black actors in film and television, and will ask questions that address the under-representation of black actors on screen, probing why opportunities for black actors in the US and the UK remain limited and aiming to drive forward a progressive agenda by spotlighting and exploring key issues for the film industry.  The BFI Black Star Symposium will be the UK’s largest celebration of black actors.
