Grey’s Anatomy co-star Jerrika Hinton, who has been a series regular on the show since Season 10 as surgical resident Stephanie Edwards, has been cast as the female lead opposite Jono Kenyon in the upcoming Shondaland hybrid comedy pilot titled Toast. The pilot was written by Scott Foley and Greg Gunberg who will serve as executive producers alongside Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers. Emmy-winning director Gail Mancuso will direct this pilot.
Dallas, Texas native Hinton made her film debut playing Khandi Alexander’s character’s daughter in the 2006 drama Rain. The following years, Hinton guest-starred in several television series such as Gilmore Girls, Everybody Hates Chris, Zoey 101, Ghost Whisperer, Gossip Girl, Lie to Me, Bones, and Scandal. Hinton started on Grey’s as a recurring character in Season 9. She was then promoted to series-regular at the beginning of Season 10. Grey’s is now in its 12th season.
Toast revolves around engaged couple Max Leeds and Page (Hinton), who, over their wedding rehearsal dinner, have their eclectic family and friends give toasts recalling anecdotes about the couple — but flashbacks reveal that the toasts don’t always get it right, as we watch the true story of their complicated, funny and relateable road to marriage.
Hinton’s Page is Max’s confident, no-nonsense, self-aware, soon-to-be bride. She’s spent most of her life working very hard but feeling a bit sheltered by her well-to-do Texas family. In an effort to break the mold, Page finds herself wanting to take a risk with the charismatic but awkward Max.
Hinton is expected to continue her roll on Grey’s Anatomy Season 13, which has already received a green light.
If Toast is picked up by ABC,this will make five shows on the air by the producing titan Shonda Rhimes.
