Tony Award winner actress Cynthia Erivo (The Color Purple – Broadway) has joined the cast of Drew Goddard’s upcoming 20th Century Fox thriller Bad Times at the El Royale.

The film is set at a run-down hotel near California’s Lake Tahoe named the El Royale and revolves around a cast of characters whose own shady agendas will violently collide.  Erivo has been cast to play “a down-on-her-luck singer who is in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Filming is scheduled to begin in January.

Erivo won a Tony for her role in Broadway’s revival of The Color Purple.  Her on screen credits include the U.K. series The Tunnel and Mr. Selfridge, and her additional stage credits include I Can’t Sing!, the U.K. tour of Sister Act and the recent one-night-only concert performance of The Last Five Years.  She is currently set to star in the upcoming film Windows alongside Viola Davis, and will also star in the Harriet Tubman biopic titled Harriet.
