Christine Swanson (All About Us, All About You, For the Love of Ruth) is set to helm Buffalo Soldier Girl, the story of a woman who, disguised as a man, enlisted and fought with the African-American Post Civil War era as a ‘Buffalo Soldier.’ The screenplay will be written by best-selling author Sarah Bird, who won the Meryl Streep Writer’s Lab Screenwriting Competition. Teyonah Parris (Chi-Raq, Survivor’s Remorse, Dear White People) is currently in talks to star in the film. If cast to the project, this will reunite Parris and Swanson who worked together in the upcoming biopic Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story, which will air on TV One in June.
“I’m inspired to tell stories because there is tremendous power in the storytelling process. In watching, telling and hearing stories, we stretch a bit when the commonality of the universal human condition is illuminated and we feel less isolated. Great storytelling has the ability to affect our emotions in powerful and meaningful ways.” – Christine Swanson
Buffalo Soldier Girl will be produced by Pantheon of Women whose primary goal is to give women the opportunity to show their strengths and tell their stories in front of and behind the camera. Last year Patheon screened their first film, I Dreamed Too Much, at the Bentonville Film Festival. This year, Christine Swanson will participate in the 2016 Bentonville Film Festival’s mentoring workshop while Parris will attend in support of her film, Five Nights in Maine.
Swanson is constantly engaging audiences with socially compelling content that defies stereotypes of how people of color have been depicted on screen, and was behind independent classics such as All About You and All About Us. Last year, Swanson was one of the busiest women working in the industry and directed three films for TV One: For the Love of Ruth (nominated for a NAACP Award), To Hell and Back, and Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story which will air on TV One later this year. Swanson has also been tapped to adapt the award-winning book by Ben Mikaelsen, Touching Spirit Bear, into a screenplay.
Parris starred in the critically acclaimed independent film Dear White People and can currently be seen on the Starz comedy series Survivor’s Remorse, which will premier it’s third season this summer.
Principal photography for Buffalo Soldier Girl will begin this fall in Texas.
