TV One has announced a new pilot from Radio One (later expanded into TV One) founder Cathy Hughes and Susan Banks titled Media.  The “backdoor pilot” will revolve around a wealthy and powerful family battling the competitive challenges of keeping their status and position in the communications industry, and is scheduled to premiere in 2017.

“This storyline has been in the works for over six years and I am thrilled to finally bring it to our audience.  My entire life has been dedicated to creating media outlets to entertain and inspire our community. We know our audience loves drama and that’s what Media is all about.” – Cathy Hughes

Penny Johnson Jerald (Castle, 24) stars as Jackie, the founder of Jones Universal Media Properties, known as JUMP, the world’s premier urban media conglomerate. A family tragedy forces her son, prominent lead city attorney and prosecutor Michael Jones, played by Brian White (Stomp the Yard, The Family Stone), to abandon his political aspirations and take over the company just as a ruthless rival challenges JUMP’s longtime domination of this lucrative industry.

The series will star Gary Dourdan (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), Stephen Bishop (Being Mary Jane), Chrystee Pharris (Passions, Scrubs), Blue Kimble (Devious Maids), Finesse Mitchell (Roadies), Denise Boutte (Meet the Browns), Jimmy Gonzales (Taken 3), Stelio Savante (The Making of the Mob: New York), Jillian Reeves de Ortiz (Let’s Talk), and Diane Kirby (Returned).

Hughes will serve as executive producer alongside Banks, and Kevin Arkadie (New York Undercover), who also served as writer, Sheila Ducksworth (With This Ring) and was produced for TV One by Ducksworth Productions.  Craig Ross Jr (Rise Again) will direct.

“Media captures the power struggles, secrets and stakes surrounding a family-owned business.  The outstanding cast and production team delivered on a truly excellent script.  We are ecstatic with how it turned out and confident viewers will be riveted from the first minute of the movie to the end titles.” – TV One President Brad Siegel

Hughes, founder and chairperson of Radio One, Inc., the largest African-American owned and operated broadcasting company in the nation.  She became the first African-American woman to chair a publicly held corporation, and has grown Radio One, Inc. into a multi-media company that is an urban radio market leader with 56 stations comprised of hip hop, R&B, gospel and talk radio formats.  Radio One is the first African-American company in radio history to dominate several major markets simultaneously and is the first woman-owned radio station to rank number one in any major market.
