Britne Oldford (Syfy’s Hunters) and Anna Deavere Smith (Nurse Jackie) have been confirmed to star in an ABC legal drama pilot from Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers’ Shondaland and ABC Studios, via Deadline. The project is written by Paul William Davies and directed by Tom Verica.

The series, set in the Southern District of New York (SDNY) Federal Court, aka “The Mother Court,” will follow brand-new lawyers working for defense/prosecution as they handle the most high-profile and high-stakes cases in the country amongst their intersecting personal lives.

Oldford will portray Sandra, the sensible and very intelligent public defender, driven to the law due to an injustice perpetrated on her family when she was a child. Smith will portray Tina Krissman, the no-nonsense SDNY court clerk.

Oldford currently appears in the second season of Hulu’s The Path. Smith appears as Rainbow’s mother Alicia in ABC’s Black-ish and was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Medal in 2012.
