Ava Duvernay is gearing up for production for her television series directorial debut on, Queen Sugar alongside an “all women directorial team.” Duvernay will also serve as the Executive Producer for this project.

“We are hiring an all women directorial team.  A lot of women that we know from the black independent space, that I won’t announce yet, but it’s an exciting time to invite women into the show and really try to tell the story of this family of really strong women who do an amazing thing in St. Josephine, Louisiana….and then I go off to make my next film which I haven’t announced yet so I’m really excited about it.” – Ava Duvernay

Queen Sugar is an adaptation of Natalie Baszile’s novel of the same name and follows the story of a mother and daughter who inherit a sugarcane farm in Louisiana as they navigate the triumphs and struggles of their complicated lives to run this ailing sugarcane farm in the Deep South. Rutina Wesley will be starring, with Oprah Winfrey in a reoccurring role.  Dawn-Lyen Gardner (Unforgettable, Heroes), Kofi Siriboe (Awkward, Whiplash) and Omar J. Dorsey (Ray Donovan, Selma) have also joined the cast of the new original drama series.

“I loved this book and immediately saw it as a series for OWN.  The story’s themes of reinventing your life, parenting alone, family connections and conflicts, and building new relationships are what I believe will connect our viewers to this show.” – Oprah Winfrey

“From the moment I was introduced to the book, I was captivated by the idea of a modern woman wrestling with identity, family, culture and the echoes of history.  To bring this kind of storytelling to life alongside Oprah for her network is wildly wonderful. I’m excited about what’s in store.” – Ava Duvernay

The show will air on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).  An air date has not been released yet; however, we are all very excited for this project!
