ARRAY Releasing has officially announced the eighteenth feature film acquisition, Jewel’s Catch One. Marking the second feature from woman filmmaker C. Fitz, the documentary explores the legacy of America’s oldest Black-owned disco club as well as the life of businesswoman and activist, Jewel Thais-Williams, who provided safe spaces for LGBTQ, Black and AIDS impacted communities in Los Angeles for four decades.  ARRAY has acquired worldwide distribution rights and will debutJewel’s Catch One on May 1 with a national screening tour and simultaneous release on Netflix. The announcement was made by ARRAY Founder Ava DuVernay.

Ms. Fitz’s Jewel’s Catch One is an electric and melodic journey highlighted by exclusive interviews with Sharon Stone, Thelma Houston, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Madonna, Sandra Bernhard, Thea Austin, Jenifer Lewis, Representative Maxine Waters and Bonnie Pointer. CCH Pounder narrates this historically important film rich with music from the last forty years.  “Through her film, documentarian C. Fitz shows how one woman created an inclusive venue and sense of belonging in a major U.S. city,” explained ARRAY’s Vice President Tilane Jones.

“We’re excited to add this meaningful work to ARRAY’s catalog and we look forward to building conversations with audiences worldwide about the story’s themes of activism and representation.”  The deal was negotiated by Gordon Bobb of Del, Shaw, Moonves, Tanaka, Finkelstein & Lezcano on behalf of ARRAY as well as Elsa Ramo and Tiffany Boyle of Ramo Law for the filmmakers.

DuVernay launched ARRAY in 2010 under the name African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AFFRM).  In 2015 the company re-branded itself as ARRAY and expanded its focus to release and champion films by black filmmakers from the African diaspora, as well as women and other filmmakers of color.  Since its inception in 2010, DuVernay and her team at ARRAY have committed themselves wholeheartedly to finding ways to expose films by people of color and women to audiences across the country.
