Audra McDonald and Gayle King will be honored by Variety at the Power of Women: New York luncheon alongside Jessica Chastain, Chelsea Clinton, Blake Lively, and Viacom vice chair Shari Redstone for their outstanding humanitarian efforts. The award will be given during the magazine’s annual “Women in Power” luncheon in Manhattan.

Saturday Night Live star Vanessa Bayer will host the private event, now in its fourth year, and the honorees will appear on the cover of Variety’s April 18 issue.

Six-time Tony-winning actress McDonald is being honored for her work with Covenant House, which helps homeless youth in 30 cities.  Her Tony award-winning streak is for her portrayals in Carousel, Master Class, A Raisin in the Sun, 110 in the Shade, Porgy and Bess and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill. She starred in the ABC television drama Private Practice as Dr. Naomi Bennett. She also won Emmys for her miniseries/movie portrayal in A Raisin in the Sun and special class program portrayal in Sweeney Todd (Live from Lincoln Center).

King, editor-at-large of O, The Oprah Magazine and co-host of CBS This Morning, is involved with charities the Bowery Mission, which serves hungry and homeless New Yorkers, and SEO Scholars, which helps underserved public high school students get to and through college.

Last year Variety celebrated Lupita Nyong’o along with Misty Copeland, Megyn Kelly, Julianne Moore and Vera Wang.  Congrats to Audra McDonald and Gayle King! These two supremely accomplished ladies definitely deserve to be among this short group of honorees!
