Academy Award and Emmy Award-nominated actress Angela Bassett (American Horror Story) has joined season two of the Netflix hit series Master Of None as the mother of one of Dev’s (Aziz Ansari) best friends.  Bassett will play the “cool hip mom” of Denise (Lena Waithe), Dev’s blunt lesbian best friend, and we are told that her character will jump back and forth through time via flashbacks that involve her and some of the other characters.

The Netflix breakout comedy won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series at the 68th annual Emmy Awards last month, and has been greatly celebrated for it’s diverse ethnic and gender role representation.  The series was created by Ansari and Alan Yang, and stars Ansari, Waithe, Noël Wells, Eric Wareheim, and Kelvin Yu.

The 2017 release date for the second season of the series has not been announced; however, the entire first season can be seen on Netflix.

Bassett’s career has spanned well over two decades.  She has starred in classic 90’s films such as Boyz ‘N the Hood, The Jacksons: An American Dream, Malcolm X, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Waiting to Exhale, What’s Love Got To Do With It, and more.  Most recently she was seen on the big screen in London Has Fallen, and in the Spike Lee adaptation of Lysistrata, Chi-Raq.  Bassett can currently be seen on the latest installment of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story.
