**Update as of 7/11 Issa Rae’s GoFund me campaign has raised $685,864 of $200k goal in 4 days.

Issa Rae (Insecure) started a scholarship fund for Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man who was shot and killed by police in Baton Rogue, Louisiana, early Tuesday morning, and raised over $300,000 in less than 10 hours.

“Some of us feel helpless when these things happen, but the fund is a small step…Want to play a small part? Donate to the #AltonSterling Family Scholarship Fund. ALL proceeds will go to his fam” – Issa Rae

Rae got in contact with the family’s lawyer and started a GoFundMe page with the goal of raising $200,000 for all of Sterling’s children. In only 9 hours, the goal was met, and over 9,000 people have offered their financial support to Sterling’s five children.

Sterling, a father of five, was killed during an encounter with two police officers, who arrived on the scene in response to reports of a man carrying a gun, threatening others and selling CDs in front of a convenience store. During the altercation that was captured on video, Sterling was pinned to the ground, and shot multiple times in the chest and in the back at point blank range.  Sterling was the 184th black person killed by police this year.
